On the 21st of January 2021, Pope Francis declared French geneticist Dr. Jérôme Lejeune as Venerable, highlighting his life of heroic virtue and his contributions to the culture of life.

A good friend of JP2, Dr Lejeune is known for discovering the genetic basis for Down Syndrome in the late 50s and then spending his life and career defending the inherent dignity of all, regardless of chromosome count. He often expressed regret that his scientific findings led people to choose abortion when faced with a prenatal diagnosis they were afraid of.

In 1969 Ven. Jérôme won the world’s highest honor in genetics, and at the awards ceremony gave a speech where he rejected the morality of abortion, an unpopular opinion in his profession. That day he wrote to his wife that for expressing his belief so publicly, he had effectively “lost the Nobel Prize in Medicine”. He died in 1994 of lung cancer.

In a world that praises those who go with flow even when it means compromising your ethics, we need the strong example of Dr Lejeune more than ever. If you have a budding scientist, family with Down Syndrome, or just need another reason to name your next kid Jérôme, here’s your guy.
