Contemporary portrait of Elizabeth of Hungary. A 13th century princess, she had a huge heart for the poor and marginalized. Though her husband supported her charitable works, she often had to sneak food past disapproving extended family members. The wheat in the portrait represents the bread she would give out by the hundreds at the castle gate. After becoming a widow and subsequently being shunned by her husbands family, she continued to care for the sick and suffering until her death at 24 years of age. Saint Elizabeth is the patron of the Secular Order Franciscans.
